SJB 1:1 Program
SJB 1:1 Technology Program
One-to-one refers to one Chromebook/device for every student.
The SJB 1:1 Program allows teachers to take full advantage of new learning technologies and online educational resources when all students are equipped with a computing device. Teaching technological literacy and computing skills is a priority in our school. Equipping all students with computing devices and incorporating technology into every course is the surest way to take full advantage of new learning technologies and produce students who are technologically skilled and literate.
Technology is used daily at SJB to allow students to work online simultaneously in a class or to work collaboratively on a project, to use interactive, technology-assisted teaching strategies, to allow teachers to use “course-management software," such as Google Classroom, to organize a class or assign classwork or homework, to allow students to have access to interactive e-textbooks, digital simulations, self-paced online tests, to incorporate "flipped classroom" learning strategies, and so much more!
Technology is a very powerful tool in today's society. It has enormous potential for communication, learning, and life in the 21st century. It is our goal that every SJB student graduates "technology capable"...ready to live, learn and work successfully in our high tech world.
By the end of 8th grade, SJB students will be:
*capable information technology users
*information seekers, analyzers, and evaluators
*problem solvers and decision makers
*creative and effective users of productivity tools
*communicators, collaborators, publishers, and producers
*informed, responsible, and contributing citizens

SJB 1:1 Technology Bootcamp
-
This is a requirement for students to access the SJB network and ensures that the school is “CIPA compliant.” The Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) was enacted by Congress in 2000 to address concerns about children's access to obscene or harmful content over the Internet. CIPA imposes certain requirements on schools or libraries that receive federal funds through e-Rate. Schools subject to CIPA have to meet certification requirements, two of which are: 1) their Internet safety policies must include monitoring the online activities of minors; and 2) as required by the Protecting Children in the 21st Century Act, they must provide for educating minors about appropriate online behavior, including interacting with other individuals on social networking websites and in chat rooms, and cyberbullying awareness and response.
-
Students who do not complete the boot camp by the first day of school will have their access to the SJB network turned off until it is completed and the Google form submitted. Students without access to the network will not be able to access online textbooks or other resources until access is restored.
Auto Update Expiration (AUE) Overview
Source: https://support.google.com/chrome/a/answer/6220366?hl=en
Chrome devices receive automatic updates regularly that enhance both the device itself and the software on the device. Chrome device updates are designed to be simple for the user and, therefore, include updates to the device, Chrome operating system, browser and firmware. However, end-to-end updates for all our devices to ensure the highest levels of security requires dependencies on many third-party hardware and software providers so we cannot indefinitely ensure that older Chrome devices will receive updates to enable new OS and browser features.
General policy
-
Each device has an Auto Update Expiration (AUE) date listed; this means that before this date, devices will receive new software updates from Google.
-
Please check the Auto Update Expiration date when making a purchasing decision. Chrome device models that have not reached their AUE date will continue to receive OS updates and function with the business and education management service.
-
When a device reaches AUE, it means that automatic software updates from Google will no longer be provided.
-
Enrolled Chrome devices that have reached their AUE date will no longer receive technical support from Google.
-
Business and education customers using devices that have passed their AUE date should not expect that they can manage their devices as expected using the Google Admin console or leverage new management features released.
-
The End of Sale date is controlled by the manufacturer of the device model and has no relation to model’s AUE date.
Several students have recently approached SJB staff to repair broken or non-functioning keys on their Chromebook keyboards. This is a hardware issue and one that SJB staff cannot address. All hardware issues must be addressed promptly to prevent disruption to student engagement and learning.
SJB does not have hardware technicians on staff. We will not attempt to address hardware issues. SJB staff will do our best to troubleshoot software issues, but any attempts to repair hardware typically voids any existing warranties.
SJB provides the minimum specifications for student Chromebooks, however, you may purchase your device from any reseller. You must contact the reseller of your device for any hardware issues.
Since the devices are used and transported to and from school daily by children, we strongly encourage families to purchase warranties that will also cover accidental damage. This is a special warranty that will cover repairs due to accidents that are NOT covered with a typical warranty. Ultimately, you must decide if the cost of the warranty is worth the expense. After a certain point, you may prefer to purchase a new device instead of putting the extra money toward the cost of the warranty. This is a personal choice.
SJB purchases our school owned Chromebooks from a company called CTL, so we have experience with their product and service. Based on our experience with this company, we are comfortable recommending them to our SJB families.
IMPORTANT: If you purchased your Chromebook from CTL, please know that the school is not part of the purchase or warranty process. Always use your information when purchasing a device or submitting claims (including your email, phone number, and home address). Devices should never be shipped to the school address.
